Lighthouse Special Education is the International Department of the IVIO - Instituut Voor Individueel Onderwijs (Institute for Individual Education) , a Dutch school for Primary Special Education (Speciaal Basis Onderwijs - SBO), member of the HSV - Haagsche Schoolvereeniging .

The Lighthouse Special Education was established in 1998 to serve those members of the international community in the Netherlands whose children have special educational needs.

Using a special educational programme conducted in English and seeking advice and support from parents and educational institutions, the Lighthouse Special Education offers a new chance for children with complex behavioural and/or developmental problems to be part of the community.

Our educational approach is based upon identifying the specific abilities/talents and educational needs of each student. In this procedure the input and the involvement of both children and parents are of the greatest importance.

We strive to make the learning process for children flow as smoothly as possible, which means that there should be continuity from their former school as well as a smooth transition to their next school.

This is an essential part of our policy. Efforts will be made to enable the children to return to less specialised educational environments and, if possible, into mainstream international schools.

Lighthouse offers a new chance for children with complex behavioural and/or developmental problems.
